Along with other Royal Literary Fund Consultant Fellows, I straddle two worlds: academic and professional writing. The two books of mine published in 2018 reflect these two worlds. Success in Academic Publishing (Palgrave Macmillan), now in its second edition, like its predecessor, has received excellent critical reviews (see, for example, Amazon and the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education). Sardine (Reaktion Books) combines scholarly writing with personal narrative, capturing poetry, literature, history, gastronomy, economics and ecology in pursuit of the story behind this fish. To research Sardine I travelled across three oceans and four continents. To dip into this story, read Five Things You Need to Know About the Sardine.
The lessons from professional writing bring insight into the academic arena – enriching my contribution to the learning and teaching of academic writing.
